The Queensland Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 and Regulation 1997 [Part 15 – Confined Space] call up AS 2865 (Safe Working in Confined Spaces) in part and hold the rest of the document as a minimum standard organisations are to comply with.All other states and territories in Australia has similar legislation in place. 

There exists a requirement to prepare a written risk assessment and written authority prior to entry for all Confined Spaces. The Act specifies obligations of certain parties with regard to workplace health and safety, with the underlying principle of self-regulation and risk management used to ensure those obligations. 

The regulations aim to give legislative effect, so far as is possible under the Act, to AS 2865 Safe Working in a Confined Space. The regulations apply to a designer, manufacturer or supplier of a confined space for use at a workplace and an employer or self-employed person at a workplace at which a confined space is used.

According to AS 2865 the employer shall provide training for all persons required to work in or on a confined space. 

The Standard 2865 states that Training shall include:

  • Hazards of confined spaces
  • Assessment procedures
  • Control measures
  • Emergency procedures
  • The selection, use, fit and maintenance of safety equipment
  • Legislative requirements

Records of the training shall be kept and maintained for the time specified unless longer period are necessary, as in the case of health surveillance required. 

Our guidance in regard to course duration is obtained from The Core Training Elements for The National Standard of Safe Working in a Confined Space which list Notational-training times as: 

  • 2 - 4 hours for those that need an overview and understanding of confined spaces.
  • 5 days for those working in or on a confined space and that may be acting as a standby person.
  • Risk assessment based

Participants knowledge and competence is assessed by:

  • Verbal quizzes during the entire course
  • Observation during practical sessions
  • Participation during group sessions
  • Competency Assessment by the trainees of their own skills
  • Successful completion of group practical
  • Theory exam covering the entire course

Course Timing 

The Confined Space Entry course is normally conducted over full work day, 3 days of the week, 8.00am – 4pm with lunch 12n-12.45pm. It is possible to conduct the course over  weekends, one or two days per weekend as per your requirements. Suitable dates to be negotiated. 

Typically we conduct a 3 day CSE courses but as an alternative, other duration courses are available. The two day course is ideal for persons trained in Confined Space Entry not at present working in Confined Spaces and requiring a refresher or where the local Risk Assessment identified the confined spaces as low risk. Refresher courses for personnel having been trained within the past two years is normally only a one day course. 

Special requirements you may have to be added to the course can easily be incorporated.
